Located in the historic center of Aalen, the Urweltmuseum Aalen is one of Baden-Württemberg’s most fascinating natural history museums. Housed within the former Imperial City Hall and its medieval tower, the museum takes visitors on a journey through hundreds of millions of years of Earth’s history, focusing on the rich geological heritage of the Swabian Alb. Aalen is internationally known among geologists because the Jurassic rock layer known as the Aalenian was named after the region. The museum showcases this remarkable heritage through an impressive collection of around 1,000 fossils, many discovered in local quarries and former iron-ore mines. Visitors can follow the geological timeline from ancient seas to the Ice Age, learning how landscapes and life forms evolved over time. Among the highlights are spectacular Jurassic fossils, including ammonites, belemnites, corals, sea urchins, and marine reptiles. Particularly striking are the large ammonites and the glittering pyrite-covered “gold ammonites,” which are among the museum’s most famous exhibits. Fossil skeletons and skulls of prehistoric reptiles help recreate the world of the ancient tropical sea that once covered this part of Germany.
