Rundetårn, or the Round Tower, is a 17th-century architectural gem in the heart of Copenhagen, built by King Christian IV as part of the Trinitatis Complex, which also includes a church and a library. Its most distinctive feature is the 7.5-turn spiral ramp—unique in Denmark—that winds around a hollow core, allowing visitors to ascend without stairs. This design once enabled horse-drawn carriages to reach the top. At the summit, you'll find a panoramic observation deck offering 360-degree views over Copenhagen’s rooftops, including landmarks like the Marble Church, Christiansborg Palace, and Rosenborg Castle. On clear days, you can even see as far as Sweden. The tower also houses Europe’s oldest functioning public observatory, open from mid-October to mid-March, where amateur astronomers and visitors can explore the night sky. Inside, the Library Hall hosts rotating exhibitions and cultural events, ranging from art and history to science. Hans Christian Andersen, the famed Danish author, frequented the tower and referenced it in several of his works. Rundetårn seamlessly blends history, science, and culture, making it a must-visit landmark that offers both educational insights and breathtaking city views.
Copenhagen Denmark
Rundetårn, or the Round Tower, is centrally located on Købmagergade, one of Copenhagen’s main pedestrian shopping streets, making it an easily accessible and popular stop for tourists. Its location in the historic Latin Quarter places it within walking distance of many other key attractions. Nearby, you’ll find the University of Copenhagen’s old campus buildings and the grand Church of Our Lady, Copenhagen’s cathedral. Just a short stroll away is Rosenborg Castle, set in the King’s Garden, where the Danish crown jewels are displayed. The area is also rich in cafés, boutiques, and bookshops, adding to its lively atmosphere. Visitors can continue their exploration to the nearby National Gallery of Denmark or take a leisurely walk toward Christiansborg Palace and the bustling Strøget shopping district. The tower’s central location makes it an ideal starting point for exploring the historic and cultural heart of the city.
