Théâtre de Caen

About

The Théâtre de Caen, inaugurated in 1963, is the city’s principal venue for opera, theatre, and live performance, carrying forward a tradition that began with its 18th‑century predecessor destroyed in 1944. Located on boulevard Maréchal Leclerc, it is recognised as the leading lyrical stage in Lower Normandy, presenting a rich programme each season that spans opera, theatre, dance, concerts, musical theatre, modern circus, jazz, and world music. Around a hundred performances are staged annually, attracting more than 120,000 spectators, with many events offered free of charge to encourage broad public access. The theatre is also home to La Maîtrise de Caen, nurturing young vocal talent, and collaborates with regional, national, and international companies to bring diverse productions to its stage. Its modernist architecture and spacious auditorium provide an elegant yet welcoming setting, making it a cultural landmark where heritage, creativity, and community engagement meet at the heart of Caen’s artistic life.
