Vippefyret is one of Skagen’s most distinctive historic landmarks, a simple yet ingenious wooden beacon that recalls the earliest days of coastal navigation. First built in the 17th century and later reconstructed, it functioned by hoisting a basket of burning coal on a long pivoting arm, allowing the light to be raised, lowered, and turned toward passing ships. Standing on a windswept dune with wide views over the coastline, the structure captures the raw atmosphere of Skagen’s maritime past. Its weathered timber frame and minimalist form contrast beautifully with the surrounding landscape, making it both a cultural symbol and a striking photographic subject. Vippefyret offers a quiet, evocative reminder of the ingenuity and resilience that once guided sailors through these challenging northern waters.
Skagen DenmarkVippefyret, Skagen’s historic tipping beacon, is located on a high dune by the coast at Fyrstuevej 17, about 1–1.5 kilometres north of Skagen town centre in the far north of Jutland, Denmark. It stands in open dune landscape overlooking the sea, close to Skagen Søndre Strand beach and coastal walking paths, and within easy reach of Det Hvide Fyr and Det Grå Fyr lighthouses, Skagen Bunker Museum, Skagen harbour and the town centre’s cafés, shops and cultural attractions, making it a scenic stop on a coastal walk from Skagen towards Grenen.
