Linköpings slott is one of Sweden’s oldest continuously used secular buildings and a defining landmark in the heart of Linköping. Originating as a medieval bishop’s residence in the 1100s, it later became a royal castle, reflecting the shifting balance between ecclesiastical and royal power. Much of its present character stems from 16th‑century expansions under King Gustav Vasa, who transformed the complex into a fortified Renaissance stronghold. Today, the castle’s pale façades and inner courtyards preserve the atmosphere of centuries of political, religious, and cultural life. Inside, parts of the historic interiors are accessible through the Slotts- och Domkyrkomuseum, where visitors encounter medieval stonework, ceremonial rooms, and artefacts linked to the cathedral and the Swedish monarchy. Still serving as the residence of the Bishop of Linköping, the castle remains a living monument that connects the city’s medieval origins with its modern identity.
Linköping Sweden
Linköpings slott (Linköping Castle) is located in the very centre of Linköping, directly opposite Linköping Cathedral in the historic castle district, just a short walk from Stora Torget. The castle sits in a compact cultural hub surrounded by the diocese offices, the Linköping Castle and Cathedral Museum, Konsistorieparken, the city library, and the city’s main shopping streets, with cafés, restaurants and other historic buildings clustered around the square and adjacent squares.
