Västerås Flygmuseum

About

Västerås Flygmuseum is a unique aviation museum located at Stockholm-Västerås Airport, in the historic CVV Hangar on the grounds of the former Swedish Air Force base F1 Hässlö. Established in 1997, it offers visitors a fascinating journey through the history of flight, with a strong emphasis on both military and civilian aviation in Sweden. What sets this museum apart is its impressive collection of over 25 aircraft, many of which are maintained in airworthy condition. Unlike traditional static displays found in most aviation museums, a large number of the planes here—around 40 in total across the collection—are still capable of flight, and several are regularly flown by their private owners. The exhibits include iconic Swedish military jets such as various SAAB models, along with vintage training aircraft, transport planes, and classic civilian machines that highlight the evolution of Swedish and international aviation. Housed in a 1930s-era hangar, the museum creates an authentic atmosphere where visitors can walk among the aircraft, examine engines, equipment, and artifacts up close. In addition to the planes, the museum features an exciting simulator section with several realistic flight simulators. These include options like the J 35 Draken, JAS 39 Gripen, Airbus A320, DC-10, and a classic Link Trainer, allowing guests of all ages to experience the thrill of piloting historic and modern aircraft in a safe, immersive environment.

Location

Västerås Flygmuseum is located at Stockholm–Västerås Airport, in an old hangar on Hässlögatan, at the former Västmanland Air Force base F 1‑Hässlö, just a short distance south of central Västerås. The museum sits within the airport area, making it easy to reach by car from the city centre and nearby motorway exits. Nearby, the airport surroundings and the adjacent Hässlö district offer a mix of light industry, open fields, and small local businesses, with several cafés and restaurants within a short drive that visitors can use before or after inspecting the vintage aircraft collection. The city centre of Västerås lies not far away, so a visit to the aviation museum can be combined with trips to Västerås Cathedral, Vallby Open Air Museum, and the central parks Stadsparken and Djäkneberget, all within about a 15–20‑minute drive from the airport. The proximity of the airport itself also gives an extra aviation‑orientated atmosphere, and families sometimes pair the museum with nearby parks or simple outdoor activities in the wider Västerås area for a varied day out.
