Byparken is Stavanger’s central green retreat, a welcoming park that softens the city’s urban core with water, trees and open space. The park’s layout blends winding paths with generous lawns, framed by mature trees that give it a gentle, sheltered character throughout the year. Benches positioned along the lakeside invite slow moments of watching swans glide past or simply enjoying the rhythm of the city at a distance. Seasonal flowers add colour in spring and summer, while the surrounding architecture provides a sense of history and continuity. Byparken is both a scenic viewpoint and a social meeting place, making it one of Stavanger’s most accessible and enduring public spaces.

Byparken is located in the center of Stavanger, around Breiavatnet and next to Stavanger Cathedral, so it sits right in the city’s main pedestrian area. It is an easy place to find when exploring downtown and works well as a calm green stop between the harbour and the old town. Nearby, visitors will find some of Stavanger’s best-known attractions within a short walk. Stavanger Cathedral is immediately beside the park, while Gamle Stavanger, the charming old town with white wooden houses and narrow streets, is close enough for a combined visit. The harbour area at Vågen is also nearby, offering waterfront views, cafés, and a lively city atmosphere. Just a little farther on, the Norwegian Petroleum Museum gives a strong overview of the region’s modern oil history, and the colourful Fargegaten adds one of Stavanger’s most photographed streets. Byparken is also a convenient base for reaching the city’s cultural core, with shops, restaurants, and public transport all close at hand, making it a natural starting point for sightseeing in Stavanger.
