Gamle Stavanger

About

Gamle Stavanger is one of the city’s most atmospheric districts, a beautifully preserved enclave of white wooden houses that captures the charm of 18th‑ and 19th‑century coastal life. Set on the hillside above the harbour, its narrow lanes, cobblestones and low‑roofed cottages create a sense of stepping into another era, when shipowners, craftsmen and labourers shaped the rhythm of the neighbourhood. Many of the houses are still lived in, giving the area a quiet authenticity that blends heritage with everyday life. Well‑kept gardens, flowering window boxes and glimpses of the fjord add to its gentle character, while small galleries and workshops reflect the district’s artistic spirit. As one of Europe’s best‑preserved wooden towns, Gamle Stavanger offers visitors a rare opportunity to wander through living history, experiencing the intimate scale and timeless beauty that continue to define this beloved corner of the city.

Gamle Stavanger
Location

Gamle Stavanger is located in central Stavanger, on the western side of the old harbour known as Vågen, just a short walk from the main city centre and the waterfront promenade. The area is centred around the cobbled street Øvre Strandgate, where more than 170 white wooden houses from the 18th and early 19th centuries create one of the most photographed and frequently visited neighbourhoods in the city. Nearby, Gamle Stavanger is surrounded by several major attractions that make it easy to turn a stroll through the old town into a full day of sightseeing. The harbour area lies just downhill, where the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, the Norwegian Canning Museum, and the Stavanger Maritime Museum line the quays and offer strong cultural and maritime themes to complement the historic streetscape. The colourful street Fargegaten, also known as Øvre Holmegate, is only a few minutes’ walk away and is famous for its brightly painted houses, cafés, and shops, creating a lively contrast to the quieter, white‑house lanes of Gamle Stavanger. Stavanger Cathedral, the city centre squares, and the main shopping streets are all within a comfortable radius, so visitors can easily combine a wander through the old town with a visit to the cathedral, a harbour walk, or a Lysefjord‑cruise departure from the nearby quay without leaving the pedestrian core of Stavanger.
