Kuressaare Castle

About

Kuressaare Castle is the proud centrepiece of Saaremaa, a remarkably well‑preserved medieval fortress whose clean lines and imposing towers rise above the surrounding moat and parkland. Built in the late thirteenth century as the seat of the bishops of Ösel‑Wiek, it remains one of the best‑kept castles in the Baltic region, distinguished by its square layout, high walls and serene inner courtyards. Inside, vaulted halls and stone stairways lead visitors through centuries of island history, from medieval life to the upheavals of the modern era. The atmosphere is both grand and contemplative, with exhibitions that highlight Saaremaa’s cultural heritage while allowing the architecture to speak for itself. Views from the ramparts reveal the calm beauty of Kuressaare and its coastal landscape, making the castle not only a historical monument but also a defining symbol of the island’s identity.

Location

Kuressaare Castle is located in the town of Kuressaare, the historic capital of Saaremaa, Estonia’s largest island in the Baltic Sea. The medieval fortress stands on an artificial island at the southern edge of town, surrounded by a wide moat and extensive parkland, making it a striking landmark as you enter Kuressaare from the mainland via the causeway and ferry from Muhu Island. Right next to the castle lies Kuressaare Castle Park, a spacious 19th-century green space with winding paths, ancient trees, and open lawns popular for picnics and summer concerts. Within the park you’ll find monuments, a bandstand, and the restored moat bridges that lead directly to the castle gates. Just a short walk from the fortress, the town center of Kuressaare offers cobbled streets, cafes, and the Town Hall, built in 1670, showcasing elegant Baroque architecture. Nearby attractions include the Kuressaare Kuursaal, a historic seaside resort hall beside the marina, and the sandy Kuressaare Beach with shallow, calm waters ideal for families. The Saaremaa Museum inside the castle itself displays island history, while a few minutes away is the 14th-century St. Lawrence Church. For spa culture, the town is known for its mud-bath treatment centers, many clustered within walking distance of the castle.
