Viljandi Museum

About

Viljandi Museum offers a rich, intimate portrait of southern Estonia’s cultural heritage, housed in the historic 18th‑century former manor granary in the heart of Viljandi’s Old Town. Founded in 1878, it is one of Estonia’s oldest regional museums, created by local intellectuals who feared that traditional rural life and ancient artefacts were disappearing too quickly. Their early collections—farm tools, textiles, archaeological finds—still form the museum’s core. One of the most interesting aspects of the museum is its strong connection to the Sakala region’s identity. Exhibits trace everything from medieval hillfort culture to the rise of Viljandi as a trading centre. The museum also preserves rare items linked to the Estonian national awakening, including documents and objects associated with local cultural societies. Visitors can explore displays on folk costumes, traditional crafts, and the region’s once‑important lake trade routes. A highlight is the archaeological collection, which includes artefacts from the nearby Viljandi Castle ruins, offering a tangible link to the town’s medieval power.
