Kondase Keskus

About

Kondase Keskus is one of Viljandi’s most distinctive cultural spaces, dedicated to Estonian naïve art and inspired by the life and work of Paul Kondas, the beloved local painter whose colourful, dreamlike scenes became national icons. Opened in 2003 in a former school building, the centre preserves Kondas’ legacy while giving a platform to self‑taught artists whose creativity thrives outside academic traditions. Kondas himself is best known for his whimsical landscapes and imaginative reinterpretations of folklore. His famous painting of giant strawberries scattered across a meadow has become a symbol of Viljandi’s artistic spirit. The centre’s permanent exhibition offers a rare look into his techniques, personal objects, and the playful worldview that shaped his art. Beyond Kondas’ work, the centre hosts rotating exhibitions of naïve and outsider art from Estonia and abroad. This makes it a unique institution in the Baltic region, celebrating artistic freedom, individuality, and the beauty of unconventional expression. Workshops, community events, and collaborations with the Viljandi Folk Music Festival add to its lively atmosphere.
