Basildon Park is an elegant Georgian mansion set within rolling parkland near Reading, celebrated today as one of the great revival stories of English country houses. Built in the 1770s for Sir Francis Sykes, a wealthy East India Company figure, the house was designed in a refined Palladian style, with grand symmetrical façades and sweeping views across the estate. Its interiors once showcased the height of 18th‑century taste, from ornate plasterwork to richly furnished salons. By the early 20th century, however, Basildon Park had fallen into severe decline, used by the military during the Second World War and left close to ruin. Its most fascinating chapter began in the 1950s, when Lord and Lady Iliffe purchased the derelict house and undertook a meticulous restoration. They salvaged architectural elements from demolished mansions across Britain, giving Basildon Park a second life while preserving fragments of lost heritage. Today, the house is known not only for its restored beauty but also for its appearances in film and television, including Pride & Prejudice and Downton Abbey. Surrounded by landscaped grounds and woodland walks, Basildon Park stands as a testament to resilience, craftsmanship, and the enduring charm of the English country estate.

Basildon Park is located near Lower Basildon, Berkshire, set in rolling parkland above the River Thames. It’s about 7 miles west of Reading and easily reached by car or bus from nearby Pangbourne. The 18th-century Palladian mansion is surrounded by 400 acres of gardens, woodland, and landscaped park designed for country walks. The house was beautifully restored by Lord and Lady Iliffe in the 1950s and is now cared for by the National Trust. Inside you’ll find elegant Georgian rooms, period furniture, and fine art. The house is famous as a filming location for Downton Abbey, Pride and Prejudice, and Bridgerton, which adds extra appeal for visitors. Nearby, you can explore the Thames Path for riverside walks between Pangbourne and Goring.
