Kuldiga Castle Park

About

Kuldīga Castle Park is a peaceful green oasis built on the historic site of the former Kuldīga Castle, once the residence of the Dukes of Courland. Although the castle itself was demolished in the 18th century, its foundations and earthworks still shape the landscape, giving the park a layered sense of history. Created in the 19th century as a romantic garden, it blends natural beauty with traces of the ducal past. One of the park’s most interesting features is the network of old ramparts and terraces that outline where the castle once stood. These subtle elevations guide visitors through spaces that once hosted courtiers, guards, and craftsmen. The park also offers views toward the Venta River, reminding visitors of the strategic importance of the site. In the early 20th century, Castle Park became a favourite leisure spot for locals, hosting concerts, gatherings, and community celebrations. Its mature trees, winding paths, and quiet ponds still reflect this tradition of relaxation and social life.

Location

Kuldīga Castle Park is located on the left bank of the Venta River in Kuldīga, a historic town in western Latvia’s Kurzeme region. The park covers the grounds where the medieval Kuldīga Castle once stood, overlooking the river just across from the Old Town. Today it is a green, open space with tree-lined paths, lawns, and old castle ruins that hint at the site’s 13th-century origins. Shaded benches and quiet walkways make it a calm place to pause while exploring the town. From the park, Kuldīga’s main sights are all within a short walk. Directly across the river is the UNESCO-listed Old Town, with cobbled streets, 17th and 18th-century houses, and the Alekšupīte River flowing between buildings in a scene that earned Kuldīga the nickname “Venice of Latvia.” Just downstream is the Venta Rapid, Europe’s widest waterfall, stretching 240 meters across. In spring you can watch fish leap upstream over the low cascade. The 19th-century Brick Bridge with its wide arches crosses the Venta nearby and is a favorite for sunset photos. Other landmarks close to the park include the Needle Tower, a former wooden fire lookout with views over the town, and St. Catherine’s Lutheran Church on Baznīcas Square. The Kuldīga District Museum is also nearby, set in the old town hall.
