Kuldīga brick bridge over Venta

About

Kuldīga’s brick bridge over the Venta is one of Latvia’s most recognisable landmarks, celebrated for its elegant red‑brick arches and its remarkable scale. Completed in 1874, it was designed to accommodate horse‑drawn carriages and early traffic, making it one of the widest road bridges in Europe at the time. Its seven arches stretch across 164 metres, all built from locally fired bricks that give the structure its warm, distinctive colour. The bridge stands beside the famous Venta Rapid, the widest waterfall in Europe, creating a dramatic setting where history and nature meet. In spring, visitors can witness the unusual sight of fish attempting to “jump” the rapids, a phenomenon that once inspired inventive fishing techniques unique to the region. The bridge itself has survived wars, floods, and changing transport needs, undergoing careful restoration to preserve its 19th‑century character.
