Biržai Church of St. John the Baptist

About

Biržai Church of St. John the Baptist is one of the town’s most recognisable landmarks, a graceful neo‑Gothic structure completed in the early twentieth century after earlier wooden churches were lost to war and fire. Its twin towers rise above the surrounding streets, symbolising the revival of Catholic life in a region long shaped by noble families, shifting borders, and religious diversity. An interesting detail is that the church was built largely through local donations, reflecting the strong community spirit of Biržai’s parishioners. Inside, the church feels bright and spacious, with tall pointed arches and slender columns that draw the eye upward. Visitors can admire its richly carved wooden altars, each decorated with expressive sculptures and traditional Lithuanian ornamentation. Stained‑glass windows illuminate scenes from the life of St. John the Baptist, adding colour and warmth to the interior. The organ loft is another highlight, hosting concerts that make full use of the building’s resonant acoustics. Quiet chapels along the sides offer space for reflection, while the main nave reveals the harmonious blend of craftsmanship and devotion that defines this church.
