Biržai Evangelical Reformed Church is one of the most important Reformed temples in Lithuania and a symbol of the long presence of the Calvinist tradition in Biržai. Closely linked to the Radziwiłł family, who were major patrons of the Reformation, the church has stood as a centre of learning, printing, and religious life since the seventeenth century. Although the original building was destroyed during wars, the current structure, completed in the nineteenth century, preserves the sober elegance typical of Reformed architecture. Inside, the church reflects the principles of simplicity and clarity. The bright, open interior is dominated by a wooden pulpit and a central communion table, emphasising the importance of preaching. Visitors can see memorial plaques dedicated to members of the Radziwiłł family and other notable figures of the Reformed community. The gallery level offers a good view of the hall and its restrained decorative details. The church also preserves historical books and documents, highlighting its role as a cultural and intellectual centre. Concerts and community events occasionally fill the space, bringing a warm, living atmosphere to this historically significant sanctuary.
Biržai Lithuania
The Evangelical Reformed Church in Biržai is located on Reformatų g. 2 in the historical center of Biržai, a town in northern Lithuania near the Latvian border. It stands very close to Biržai Castle and the famous pedestrian bridge over Lake Širvėna, making it part of the town’s main tourist cluster. Nearby attractions are all within a short walk. The most important is Biržai Castle, Lithuania’s best-preserved bastion fortress, which houses the Biržai Region Museum “Sėla” with interactive warfare exhibitions, brewing heritage displays, and restored fortifications. Just next to the castle is Lithuania’s longest pedestrian bridge over a lake, a romantic spot favored by newlyweds, leading directly to the beautiful neoclassical Astravas Manor on the Astravas Peninsula across Lake Širvėna. Also nearby is Julius Janonis Square with its renovated surroundings, benches, swings, and vibrant flower gardens that play hourly musical tunes, plus a castle-themed children’s playground close to the Evangelical Reformed Church. Just a short drive away are natural attractions such as the Kirkilai Landscape Reserve with its famous sinkholes and observation tower, the Cow Cave with an underground lake, and Smardone Spring in Likėnai Park, as well as the “Biržų duona” bakery shop for fresh local bread.
