Museum Alka of Samogitian History in Telšiai is one of the key guardians of Samogitia’s cultural identity, founded in the early 20th century to preserve the traditions, archaeology, and folklore of this distinct Lithuanian region. Its name, “Alka,” refers to ancient sacred sites once used for pagan rituals, hinting at the deep historical layers the museum explores. An interesting fact is that the institution began with just a handful of artefacts collected by local enthusiasts and has since grown into one of the richest regional museums in Lithuania. Inside, visitors can follow exhibitions that trace Samogitia from prehistoric settlements to medieval resistance and the rise of local nobility. Archaeological finds, traditional costumes, and household items reveal everyday life across centuries. The ethnographic section stands out for its detailed reconstructions of Samogitian interiors, showcasing carved wooden furniture, textiles, and ritual objects. The museum also highlights the region’s strong identity, known for its dialect, stubborn independence, and unique customs. Rotating exhibitions and educational displays add contemporary perspectives, making the museum both a historical archive and a lively cultural centre.
