Telšiai Cathedral

Telšiai Cathedral, also known as the Cathedral of St. Anthony of Padua, is the spiritual heart of Samogitia and one of the region’s most distinctive churches. Its origins trace back to a Franciscan monastery, but the current structure took shape in the early twentieth century, blending neo‑Romanesque and neo‑Gothic elements. An interesting fact is that the cathedral stands on a hill once associated with ancient pagan worship, symbolising the deep cultural layers of Telšiai. Inside, the cathedral impresses with its harmonious, light‑filled interior. Visitors can admire richly carved altars, expressive sculptures, and detailed Stations of the Cross created by notable Lithuanian artists. The main altar, dedicated to St. Anthony, draws attention with its elegant composition and warm wooden tones. Stained‑glass windows illuminate biblical scenes and local saints, adding colour and atmosphere throughout the day. The crypt holds memorials to Samogitian bishops, while side chapels offer quiet spaces for reflection. Together, these elements create a serene and historically rich environment that reflects the region’s strong Catholic identity.
