Lake Zell

About

Lake Zell is the shimmering centrepiece of Zell am See, a glacial lake whose clarity and deep blue colour have fascinated visitors for centuries. Formed during the last Ice Age, it reaches depths of around 70 metres and maintains remarkable water quality—so clean, in fact, that it is officially classified as drinking‑water grade. An interesting fact is that the lake freezes completely in particularly cold winters, turning into a vast natural ice rink that locals have used for skating and curling since the 19th century. Along the shore, visitors can explore a mix of promenades, bathing areas, and quiet natural corners. The eastern shore offers panoramic views of the town and the Schmittenhöhe mountain, while the southern end opens toward the Hohe Tauern peaks, creating postcard‑like scenery in every direction. Boat trips provide a gentle way to experience the lake, with traditional electric boats gliding silently across the water. In summer, swimming spots and lidos make the lake a refreshing retreat, while walkers and cyclists enjoy the 11‑kilometre circular path. The changing colours—turquoise in spring, deep blue in summer, silver in winter—give Lake Zell a character that shifts with the seasons.

Location

Lake Zell, or Zeller See, is located in Zell am See in the Salzburg region of Austria. The lake sits at the foot of the Schmittenhöhe mountain and forms the natural center of the town, with the historic old town running along its western shore. Surrounded by the Kitzbühel Alps and the Hohe Tauern range, it’s one of the cleanest and warmest alpine lakes for swimming in summer and a scenic ice-skating area in winter. The lakeside Esplanade stretches for several kilometers and connects the main attractions. Walking south from the town center, you reach Elisabeth Park with fountains, playgrounds, and direct access to public lido beaches. Boat cruises depart from the pier and circle the lake, offering views of the mountains and surrounding villages. Near the center, the pedestrian old town starts right at the water’s edge, with the Gothic Parish Church of St. Hippolyte, the medieval Vogtturm museum tower, and Renaissance Rosenberg Castle all within a few minutes’ walk. For mountain activities, the CityXpress gondola to the Schmittenhöhe is close to the lake’s western shore. It takes visitors up to panoramic hiking trails, ski slopes, and alpine restaurants year-round. On the opposite shore, the village of Thumersbach offers quieter beaches and access to hiking paths.
