Panorama-Plattform Kaiserblick

About

Panorama‑Plattform Kaiserblick is one of Zell am See’s most striking viewpoints, perched high above the Schmittenhöhe slopes and designed to frame the Hohe Tauern peaks like a natural theatre. Its name, “Kaiserblick,” refers to the majestic view toward Austria’s highest mountains, including the Großglockner, which dominates the horizon on clear days. An interesting fact is that the platform’s steel structure is anchored directly into the mountainside, allowing it to hover above the valley with minimal visual impact. Inside the viewing area, visitors step onto a cantilevered deck that creates the sensation of floating above Lake Zell. The platform’s glass elements open unobstructed sightlines toward the Kitzsteinhorn glacier, the Steinernes Meer, and the rolling Pinzgau hills. Information panels help identify the surrounding peaks, turning the panorama into a geography lesson in real time. The platform is accessible via hiking trails and cable‑car routes, making it a rewarding stop for both casual walkers and experienced mountain lovers. In winter, skiers glide past it, often pausing for a moment of quiet awe. Kaiserblick is less a structure than an experience—a place where landscape, altitude, and Alpine light come together in a single breathtaking moment.

Location

The Panorama-Plattform Kaiserblick is located on the Schmittenhöhe mountain above Zell am See in the Austrian state of Salzburg. You reach it via the Schmittenhöhebahn gondola from the center of Zell am See. The platform sits near the summit area at around 1965 meters and faces east, giving a sweeping view over Lake Zell, the town below, and more than 30 Alpine peaks, including the Kitzsteinhorn glacier and the Hohe Tauern range. Its name recalls Emperor Franz Joseph I, who admired the same panorama. From Kaiserblick, several attractions are right at your feet. The Elisabeth Chapel, a small neo-Romanesque church built in memory of Empress Elisabeth, is only a short walk away and is a popular photo spot. The Sisi Rundweg trail circles the summit area and connects viewpoints, alpine meadows, and rest huts. Multiple mountain restaurants like AreitLounge and Sonnkogel offer terraces with the same lake-and-mountain vista. After returning to the valley, you’re immediately in Zell am See’s old town. Lake Zell with its promenade, boat cruises, and lido beaches is a few minutes from the gondola base, along with the Vogtturm museum and Rosenberg Castle. With lake, town, and high-alpine terrain linked by one lift, Kaiserblick makes a perfect lookout for combining scenery with everything Zell am See offers.
