Corvin Castle in Hunedoara is one of Europe’s great Gothic fortresses, a dramatic blend of pointed towers, stone bridges, and richly decorated halls that feels lifted from a medieval legend. Built by the Corvin family in the 15th century, it served both as a noble residence and a defensive stronghold. Its fairy‑tale appearance is no accident: later rulers added Renaissance loggias and painted façades, giving the castle its iconic silhouette. Inside, the Knights’ Hall is a highlight. This grand space, supported by massive stone columns, once hosted feasts and judicial sessions. Nearby, the Diet Hall impresses with its carved portals and colourful heraldic symbols. The castle’s chapel preserves fragments of early frescoes, offering a glimpse into its spiritual life. One of the most interesting facts is the legend of the raven, the Corvin family emblem. According to tradition, a raven stole a golden ring belonging to the young John of Hunedoara; when he retrieved it, the bird became a symbol of courage and destiny. You’ll find raven motifs throughout the castle. The torture chamber and dungeon add a darker note, displaying instruments and stories from the fortress’s harsher past.

Corvin Castle, also called Hunyadi Castle or Castelul Corvinilor, rises dramatically on Strada Castelului in the city of Hunedoara. Built in the 15th century on a rocky outcrop above the Zlaști River, it began as a fortress for John Hunyadi, one of Hungary’s most influential military leaders. Gothic and Renaissance styles merge in its pointed turrets, stone walls, and long wooden drawbridge over a deep moat. The castle is Hunedoara’s main attraction and one of the Seven Wonders of Romania, but the area offers more to see. Just outside the castle walls is the Expoziție Inedită Ev Mediu: Tortură și Execuție, a museum of medieval torture instruments with a reconstructed guillotine in the courtyard. Nearby, Muzeul Trenulețelor “Valentin Banciu” displays intricate model railways and dioramas that delight children and adults. The Muzeul Comunismului Hunedoara recreates life during Romania’s socialist period with schoolrooms, household items, and military uniforms. Walk to Pietonala Corvin, the modern pedestrian boulevard, to find the Musical Fountain, cafes, and Restaurant Corviniana, a 4-star spot with views of the castle. Also in the center are Saints Constantine and Elena Orthodox Cathedral, Central Park, and the History Museum of Hunedoara.
