The Museum of Slavonia is one of Croatia’s oldest and most important regional museums, founded in 1877 and deeply woven into Osijek’s cultural identity. Housed in the historic Tvrđa fortress district, it occupies Baroque buildings that once served the military administration, giving every visit a sense of stepping into the city’s layered past. Inside, the museum offers a rich journey through Slavonia’s history. The archaeological collection is a highlight, featuring Roman artefacts from ancient Mursa—coins, pottery, and finely crafted jewellery that reveal the sophistication of life along the Drava River. Medieval finds, including weapons and religious objects, trace the region’s turbulent centuries of conflict and trade. The ethnographic section showcases traditional Slavonian life: embroidered costumes, handcrafted tools, and household items that illustrate rural customs and craftsmanship. One of the most interesting exhibits is the collection of ceremonial folk attire, known for its vivid colours and intricate patterns. Art lovers can explore paintings and sculptures by prominent Croatian artists, while temporary exhibitions often focus on local heritage, photography, or contemporary creativity.

Location

The Museum of Slavonia is in Osijek, in eastern Croatia, and it sits right in the middle of Tvrđa, the old baroque fortress district. The exact address is Trg Svetog Trojstva 6, on Holy Trinity Square. It is housed in two beautiful old baroque buildings, the former City Magistracy from 1702, so the museum itself is part of the history. It is the largest general museum in Croatia and the oldest cultural institution in Osijek, founded back in 1877. Its location is perfect for exploring because Tvrđa is basically an open air museum. Step outside and you are on the main square with Holy Trinity monument in the center, surrounded by cafes and pastel baroque facades. Right next door is the Archaeological Museum, and just a minute away is the Church of St. Michael with its tall towers. Everything in Tvrđa is walkable. In a few minutes you can reach the Water Gate and the Drava river promenade, great for a walk or a drink with a view. Across the river there is the old town of Donji Grad and the big park areas, while a short walk the other way brings you toward the main modern center of Osijek with Ante Starčević Square. If you are in Tvrđa you can easily spend half a day hopping from the Museum of Slavonia to little galleries, craft shops and restaurants without needing any transport.
