Captain's Tower Bihać

About

Captain’s Tower in Bihać is one of the city’s most atmospheric landmarks, a compact medieval fortification that once guarded the Una River crossing. Built in the 13th century as part of the town’s defensive ring, it later served as a noble residence, an Ottoman watchpost, and even a prison—each era leaving subtle architectural traces that make the tower unusually layered for its size. Inside, visitors can explore its narrow stone staircase and thick walls, which reveal how seriously Bihać took its frontier role. The lower chamber, originally a storage and guard room, still feels austere and cool even in summer. The upper floor offers the most intriguing detail: carved window frames that blend Gothic and early Ottoman influences, a rare combination in the region. From the top, small lookout openings frame the river and old town, giving a sense of how soldiers monitored approaching caravans and potential threats.
