Hercegovačka Gračanica is Trebinje’s most iconic hilltop landmark, a modern Serbian Orthodox church built in 2000 as a faithful homage to the original Gračanica Monastery in Kosovo. Rising above the city on Crkvina Hill, it was commissioned as a memorial to poet Jovan Dučić, who wished to be buried in a replica of the medieval masterpiece he admired. Its position offers one of the most commanding panoramas in Herzegovina, with the city, vineyards, and the mountains unfolding below. Inside, the church is richly decorated in the traditional Byzantine style. The interior frescoes depict saints, prophets, and scenes from the life of Christ, painted in vivid colours that echo medieval Orthodox art. The iconostasis is particularly striking: a carved wooden screen filled with gilded icons, each crafted by regional artisans. Dučić’s tomb rests within the church, making the site not only a spiritual centre but also a cultural sanctuary dedicated to Trebinje’s most celebrated writer. Visitors can also explore the surrounding complex, which includes a small museum of religious art and a peaceful courtyard lined with stone paths and cypress trees. The atmosphere blends devotion, heritage, and breathtaking landscape.
