Contemporary Gallery of the Ečka Art Colony is one of Zrenjanin’s most inspiring cultural spaces, dedicated to the legacy of the Ečka Art Colony—one of the oldest continuous art gatherings in Europe, founded in 1956. Each summer, painters from Serbia and abroad meet in the nearby Ečka Castle to create new works, and the gallery in Zrenjanin serves as the permanent home for this evolving collection. Inside, visitors can explore a vibrant selection of paintings, drawings, and mixed‑media works created across decades. The collection reflects shifting artistic trends: from lyrical abstraction and expressive colour fields of the mid‑20th century to contemporary conceptual pieces. One of the most interesting aspects is the annual cycle—each year’s colony contributes a new set of works, making the gallery a living archive of artistic dialogue. The interior is bright and minimalist, allowing the artworks to dominate the space. Because the gallery sits directly on Freedom Square, stepping outside places you right next to many of the town’s most iconic attractions. Just across the square is the National Museum Zrenjanin, which houses rich archaeological and historical collections, alongside the elegant neo-baroque Zrenjanin City Hall and the magnificent Roman Catholic Cathedral of Saint John of Nepomuk. Just a few steps away stands the National Theatre Toša Jovanović, the oldest theatre building in Serbia, where you can admire classic 19th-century architecture. A short walk through the central pedestrian district brings you to the grand Palace of Justice and the famous Dry Bridge. If you want to explore the roots of the art colony itself, a short drive south brings you to the village of Ečka, where you can visit Kaštel Ečka, a historic 19th-century hunting castle set within peaceful park grounds.
