Church of St. Paraskeva

This striking chapel‑mausoleum stands as Pleven’s most symbolic memorial to the Russo‑Turkish War of 1877–78. Completed in 1907, it commemorates the soldiers who fell during the Siege of Pleven, one of the conflict’s decisive and most brutal battles. Its exterior blends Neo‑Byzantine forms with a tall, elegant dome crowned by a cross, giving it a solemn yet heroic presence in the city center. Inside, the atmosphere shifts from monumental to intimate. The lower level houses the ossuary, where the remains of Russian, Romanian, and Bulgarian soldiers are interred. It’s a powerful space, quiet and dim, designed to evoke reflection rather than spectacle. The upper chapel is brighter, decorated with murals depicting St. George slaying the dragon—an image symbolizing courage and liberation. The iconostasis is particularly noteworthy: carved with fine geometric patterns and filled with icons donated by families of veterans. Look for the icon of St. George in full armor, a local favorite. Another interesting detail is the marble plaques listing the regiments that fought in Pleven, each a fragment of the city’s wartime story.
