Skobelev Park is one of Pleven’s most meaningful historic landscapes, created on the very ground where some of the fiercest battles of the 1877 Siege of Pleven unfolded. Established in the early 20th century, it was designed not simply as a green space but as a living memorial, blending nature with memory. Its rolling terrain still follows the contours of former military positions, giving visitors a subtle sense of the battlefield’s scale. The park’s most famous feature is the Pleven Panorama, a monumental rotunda housing a vast 360‑degree painting and diorama of the siege. Even if you’ve seen panoramas elsewhere, this one stands out for its immersive detail and emotional impact. Nearby, you’ll find preserved trenches and earthworks—rare outdoor relics that make the history feel tangible. Inside the Panorama complex, look for the dramatic central hall where painted scenes merge seamlessly with real objects: cannons, earth, and battlefield debris. This fusion creates the illusion of stepping directly into 1877. The upper gallery offers a quieter perspective, highlighting the artistry behind the massive canvas.

Pleven Bulgaria

Location

Skobelev Park spreads out on the southern edge of Pleven, Bulgaria, along General Vladimir Vazov Street. The main entrance sits near number 3 on that road, a short ride or walk from the city center, set right on the old battlefield from the 1877 siege. It’s a green, open space with paths, old cannons, and memorials that feel quiet and reflective. Right inside the park you’ll find the famous Pleven Panorama, a striking museum that brings the historic battles to life in a big circular painting. The House-Museum of Tsar Liberator Alexander II is also close by within the same memorial area. From here it’s an easy trip back toward the center to see the Chapel-Mausoleum of St. George the Victorious on Vazrazhdane Square, the Regional Historical Museum, and the Church of St. Nicholas. A little farther south lies Kaylaka Park with its cliffs, lakes, and the remains of the ancient Storgozia fortress. The whole stretch lets you mix a peaceful walk through the park with a few of Pleven’s other key historical spots without much hassle.
