Museum of Peja

About

Museum of Peja is one of western Kosovo’s most engaging cultural institutions, offering a clear, well‑structured journey through the region’s archaeology, ethnography, and artistic heritage. Housed in a former municipal building near the old bazaar, it reflects Peja’s long history as a crossroads between mountain communities, Ottoman trade routes, and medieval Serbian monasteries. Inside, visitors can explore archaeological finds from the Rugova Valley, including Illyrian pottery, bronze tools, and Roman coins that reveal early settlement patterns. One of the most interesting sections is the ethnographic collection, where traditional household items, embroidered garments, and woodworking tools illustrate daily life in Peja before industrialization. The museum also preserves rare examples of local filigree jewelry, a craft for which the city was once famous. A small art gallery showcases works by regional painters, offering a modern counterpoint to the historical exhibits. Temporary displays often highlight Rugova shepherd culture, traditional music, or the city’s role in resistance movements.
