Ethnological Museum of Gjilan

Set inside a beautifully preserved 19th‑century house, the Ethnological Museum of Gjilan offers an intimate look at the region’s cultural heritage. Once a family residence, the building itself is part of the experience: wooden balconies, carved ceilings, and stone foundations reflect traditional craftsmanship typical of eastern Kosovo. Its architecture alone makes it one of the city’s most atmospheric landmarks. Inside, visitors move through rooms arranged much as they were a century ago. The main salon displays embroidered textiles, copperware, and finely decorated wooden chests that once held family valuables. One of the most interesting items is a traditional loom still set up with threads, showing how women produced intricate fabrics used for clothing and household decoration. The costume collection is a highlight. Outfits from Gjilan and surrounding villages reveal differences in patterns, colors, and materials, offering insight into local identity and social customs. A small section dedicated to wedding traditions features jewelry, ceremonial garments, and objects used during multi‑day celebrations.
