Church of St. Nicholas Perast

Church of St. Nicholas is the spiritual heart of Perast, a landmark that reflects the town’s long maritime and religious traditions. The present church dates to the early 17th century, built during the Venetian period, though its foundations are older. Its tall bell tower—one of the most recognisable silhouettes in the Bay of Kotor—was added in the 18th century and served both liturgical and civic purposes, ringing out warnings during storms or enemy approach. Inside, the church holds a rich collection of Baroque altarpieces painted by local and Venetian masters. The iconostasis blends Orthodox tradition with Adriatic artistic influences, creating a unique visual dialogue. One of the most interesting features is the treasury, where silver votive gifts donated by sailors are displayed—each representing gratitude for surviving storms or long voyages. Visitors can also see historic documents related to Perast’s brotherhoods, which organised seafaring, charity, and defence. The church’s interior, with its stone arches and soft light, preserves the atmosphere of a community deeply tied to the sea.
