Fortress of the Holy Cross is one of Perast’s most evocative defensive landmarks, perched high above the town with sweeping views of the Bay of Kotor. Built in the 17th century during the Venetian period, it formed part of a network of fortifications protecting this strategic maritime settlement. Its elevated position allowed Perast’s defenders to monitor the narrow strait leading toward Kotor, making it a crucial lookout during times of conflict. Inside the fortress, visitors can explore stone barracks, storage rooms, and remnants of gun platforms that once held cannons aimed at the bay. The inner courtyard, now open to the sky, preserves the outlines of military life—cisterns, stairways, and thick defensive walls built to withstand artillery fire. A small chapel dedicated to the Holy Cross once stood here, giving the fortress its name and offering spiritual protection to the soldiers stationed within. The highlight is the panoramic view from the ramparts. From this vantage point, you can see Perast’s elegant palaces, the islands of Our Lady of the Rocks and St. George, and the dramatic mountains rising behind the bay.

Location

The Fortress of the Holy Cross sits high on the ridge above the small town of Perast in the Bay of Kotor. Built in the sixteenth century under Venetian rule, the ruined stone fort once helped guard the narrow Verige Strait and the approaches to the inner bay. From the terrace you look down over the whole of Perast, its waterfront palaces and the two islands just offshore – Our Lady of the Rocks with its blue-domed church and the cypress-covered islet of St. George. A short walk down into the town brings you to the Bujović Palace, home of the Perast Town Museum, and to the Church of St. Nicholas with its tall bell tower. The quiet waterfront promenade lined with baroque stone houses is only a little further. The climb up takes around half an hour on a steep path from the back of the village. Once you have taken in the views from the fort you can wander back down through the narrow streets, visit the museum or catch a boat out to the islands without any rush, enjoying the calm atmosphere of this compact baroque town.
