Bezisten in Štip is one of the city’s most atmospheric Ottoman‑era landmarks, a rare surviving covered market that once stood at the heart of local trade. Built in the 15th century, it originally served as a secure place for merchants dealing in valuable goods—its thick stone walls and heavy doors were designed to protect jewellery, fabrics, and spices. The name “bezisten” itself refers to markets specialising in luxury items, making this building a symbol of Štip’s commercial importance in the past. Inside, visitors step into a cool, vaulted space divided into small chambers that once housed individual shops. The interior layout is one of the most interesting features: narrow passages, domed ceilings, and stone niches reveal how traders displayed their goods centuries ago. Today, the bezisten often hosts cultural exhibitions, allowing visitors to experience the historic architecture while viewing artworks, crafts, or historical displays. The building’s exterior is equally striking. Its stone façade, modest yet elegant, reflects classic Ottoman urban design.
