The Maritime Museum of Crete, set at the entrance of Chania’s Venetian Harbour, offers a vivid journey through the island’s long naval history. Founded in 1973, it occupies the historic Firka Fortress, where the Greek flag was raised in 1913 to mark Crete’s union with Greece. This symbolic location adds emotional weight to the museum’s story. Inside, visitors explore detailed exhibits ranging from Minoan shipbuilding to modern naval operations. One of the most interesting features is the large-scale model of a Minoan ship reconstructed using ancient techniques; it demonstrates how advanced Bronze Age navigation was in the eastern Mediterranean. The museum also displays Venetian and Ottoman maritime artefacts, including navigational instruments, cannons, and ship parts recovered from local waters. A highlight is the section dedicated to World War II and the Battle of Crete, featuring uniforms, maps, and personal items that reveal the human side of the conflict. The museum’s second building, near Nea Chora, houses an impressive collection of ship models showing how naval architecture evolved over centuries.
