Holy Metropolitan Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary

The Holy Metropolitan Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary, known locally as Trimartiri, is Chania’s most important Orthodox church and a defining landmark of the old town. Its story is remarkable: during Ottoman rule the building served as a soap factory, and only after the Christian community negotiated its return in the mid‑19th century was it transformed into the grand basilica seen today. The bell tower, added later, became a symbol of the city’s spiritual revival. Inside, the church is spacious and luminous, with three aisles that give Trimartiri its name. The interior blends Cretan tradition with 19th‑century ecclesiastical style. Visitors can admire the carved wooden iconostasis, rich with gilded details and icons painted by notable Cretan artists. The central icon of the Virgin Mary is especially revered, drawing worshippers during major feast days. One of the most interesting features is the collection of smaller side chapels, each dedicated to different saints and decorated with distinctive iconography. The church also houses relics and liturgical items that reflect Chania’s long religious continuity despite periods of foreign rule.
