Masson Mills Working Textile Museum in Matlock Bath offers one of Britain’s most vivid industrial heritage experiences. Set inside Sir Richard Arkwright’s 1783 water‑powered cotton mill, part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, the museum preserves the machinery that transformed raw cotton into yarn and woven fabric. Inside, visitors walk through the Weaving Shed, Doubling Room, Victorian Workshop and Bobbin Room, where historic looms, doubling frames and spool‑winding machines still operate during demonstrations. The atmosphere is striking: clattering Lancashire and Yorkshire looms, Jacquard mechanisms—the mechanical ancestors of computing—and rope‑braiding machines evoke the noise and rhythm of a working mill.
