Leawood Pumphouse

Leawood Pumphouse is one of Derbyshire’s most impressive pieces of Victorian engineering, standing beside the tranquil Cromford Canal near Cromford Wharf. Completed in 1849, the pumphouse was built to solve a practical problem: the canal often lacked enough water to keep boats moving, so engineers installed a massive beam engine capable of lifting four tons of water per stroke from the River Derwent into the canal. When running at full power, it could deliver more than 800,000 litres of water in a single hour. Inside, visitors can admire the towering 15‑ton beam, the polished brass fittings and the elegant cast‑iron columns that support the engine house. The machinery was designed by the famous firm Thornewill & Warham of Burton upon Trent, and much of it remains in remarkable working condition. On selected steaming days, volunteers fire up the boiler and bring the engine to life, filling the building with the rhythmic hiss, clank and heat of a true Victorian powerhouse. The surrounding area adds to the experience: the Cromford Canal is rich in wildlife, and nearby High Peak Junction offers further insight into early railway engineering. Together, they form one of the most atmospheric industrial heritage landscapes in the county.
