Durham Castle

Durham Castle, part of the city’s UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of England’s most remarkable Norman fortresses, continuously lived in for nearly a thousand years. Built in the late 11th century to secure Norman rule in the north, it later became the ceremonial and administrative seat of the Prince Bishops of Durham, who wielded powers rivaling those of the king.
