The D-Day Story

The D‑Day Story in Portsmouth is Hampshire’s most immersive museum dedicated to the events of 6 June 1944, blending powerful personal accounts with large‑scale artefacts to explain how the largest amphibious invasion in history was planned and executed. Its centrepiece is the magnificent Overlord Embroidery, a 34‑panel, 83‑metre‑long artwork inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry, depicting the entire D‑Day campaign with striking detail and colour. Inside the main galleries, visitors can explore original uniforms, maps, radios, landing‑craft equipment and personal belongings carried by soldiers, sailors and airmen. These objects—letters home, shaving kits, field rations—bring an intimate human dimension to an operation often described only in strategic terms. Interactive displays explain how the Allies coordinated thousands of ships, aircraft and vehicles, while archival footage shows the tense build‑up along the south coast. A highlight is the restored Landing Craft Tank LCT 7074, one of the last surviving vessels of its kind. Visitors can climb aboard to see how tanks and crews were transported across the Channel under fire. The museum also explores Portsmouth’s crucial role as a departure point, revealing how local communities were transformed by the preparations.
