St Albans Museum and Gallery is right in the centre of St Albans in Hertfordshire. You will find it at St Albans Town Hall, St Peter's Street, St Albans AL1 3DH, in the beautifully restored Georgian Town Hall on Market Place. It is the main museum for the city, with exhibitions on the history of St Albans from Romans to the present day, plus art shows and a lovely cafe. Right outside you have St Albans Market, held for centuries on St Peter's Street, and St Peter's Church, one of the oldest churches in the city. A short walk brings you to St Albans Cathedral, a huge Norman cathedral with amazing wall paintings and a shrine, and the medieval Clock Tower that you can climb for views. You are only five minutes from Verulamium Museum in Verulamium Park, which is full of Roman mosaics and finds from Roman Verulamium, plus the Roman Theatre ruins and the remains of Old Gorhambury House at Gorhambury Estate. The park itself has a lake, Roman walls and the hypocaust. Nearby you have Hatfield House and its Old Palace where Elizabeth I grew up, Knebworth House with its gothic towers, and Ashridge Estate with the Bridgewater Monument for woodland walks. For more history, Shaw's Corner, the home of George Bernard Shaw, and the de Havilland Aircraft Museum are an easy drive away.
