Judges' Lodgings Museum

Judges’ Lodgings Museum, set in the historic heart of Lancaster, is the city’s oldest townhouse and one of Lancashire’s most atmospheric heritage sites. Built in the 17th century, it once housed travelling judges during the Assizes, and an interesting fact is that these judges stayed here while presiding over cases at Lancaster Castle—including some of the most famous trials in English legal history. Inside, the museum offers two distinct experiences. The Georgian period rooms are beautifully furnished with pieces from the renowned Gillow furniture makers, whose craftsmanship shaped Lancaster’s reputation across Britain. These rooms feel refined and domestic, with polished wood, elegant textiles, and portraits that evoke the life of a well‑to‑do household. The second highlight is the Museum of Childhood, a charming and nostalgic collection that explores toys, games, and childhood objects from the Victorian era to the mid‑20th century. Dolls’ houses, tin toys, puzzles, and schoolroom artefacts create a lively contrast to the formality of the judges’ quarters.
