Lancashire Police Museum

Lancashire Police Museum, located within the historic corridors of Lancaster Castle, offers a compelling look at more than 200 years of policing in the county. Its setting is itself an interesting fact: the museum occupies former prison cells and administrative rooms, placing visitors directly inside spaces once used for real investigations, interviews, and detentions. Inside, the museum traces the evolution of law enforcement from the early constables of the 19th century to modern specialist units. Original uniforms, handcuffs, truncheons, and communication devices show how equipment and methods changed over time. One standout object is the Victorian “Black Maria” cell door, a rare survivor from early police transport vehicles. The recreated custody suite is one of the most atmospheric areas, allowing visitors to step into an authentic cell and understand the daily realities of policing. Displays on forensic science reveal how fingerprinting, photography, and evidence handling transformed criminal investigations. The museum also highlights notable Lancashire cases, presenting documents, photographs, and artefacts that bring real stories to life.
