The Cottage Museum

The Cottage Museum, tucked beside Lancaster Castle, is one of Lancashire’s smallest yet most atmospheric heritage sites. Housed in a tiny 18th‑century weaver’s cottage, it offers an intimate glimpse into everyday life long before industrialisation transformed the region. An interesting fact is that the building was once part of a row of workers’ homes, most of which were demolished; this surviving cottage now stands as a rare example of pre‑Victorian domestic architecture in the city. Inside, the museum recreates the living conditions of a modest family. The ground floor features a compact parlour with simple furniture, a hearth, and household objects that show how families cooked, worked, and gathered in a single shared space. The steep staircase leads to the bedroom, where a small bed, textiles, and personal items reveal how little room people had and how resourcefully they used it.
