Magdeburg Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of Saints Maurice and Catherine, is the city’s most iconic landmark and one of Germany’s earliest Gothic cathedrals. Rising majestically above the Elbe River, it was begun in 1209 on the site of Emperor Otto I’s former abbey church and completed in 1520, making it a masterpiece of medieval architecture.
