Magdeburg Cathedral, officially the Cathedral of Saints Maurice and Catherine, is the city’s most iconic landmark and one of Germany’s earliest Gothic cathedrals. Rising majestically above the Elbe River, it was begun in 1209 on the site of Emperor Otto I’s former abbey church and completed in 1520, making it a masterpiece of medieval architecture. Its soaring towers, intricate stone carvings, and luminous stained-glass windows create a striking impression both inside and out. The cathedral houses the tomb of Otto I, the first Holy Roman Emperor, along with remarkable sculptures such as the famous “Twelve Virgins” and the “Wise and Foolish Virgins.” Visitors are captivated by the vast nave, the play of light across its ribbed vaults, and the sense of history embedded in every detail.
