The former Sankt-Gangolfi Chapel in Magdeburg, once part of the archiepiscopal palace at Domplatz, is a rare surviving fragment of medieval ecclesiastical architecture. Dedicated around 1012 under Archbishop Tagino, it served as a private chapel to the archbishops and was consecrated to the Virgin Mary and Saint Gangolf. Rebuilt in 1373 under Archbishop Peter von Brünn, the chapel was transformed into a striking late Gothic structure with star vaulting and intricate ribwork. It became the collegiate church of Beatae Virginis Mariae sub aula archiepiscopalis, later known as St. Gangolf after the Reformation. Though much of the building was lost over time, the eastern choir remains, offering a glimpse into its former grandeur. Today, the preserved section stands as a quiet witness to Magdeburg’s spiritual and architectural heritage, reminding visitors of the city’s long ecclesiastical tradition and the enduring legacy of its medieval monuments.
Magdeburg GermanyThe former Sankt-Gangolfi-Kapelle in Magdeburg is located at Domplatz, near the Magdeburg Cathedral in the historic city center. The chapel was originally part of the archbishop's palace and is now preserved mainly by its eastern choir section, which is visible in the courtyard of the Magdeburg State Chancellery. Nearby are other significant historical and cultural landmarks including the Magdeburg Cathedral itself, the adjoining Knautschen Palais, and various museums and government buildings around the Domplatz. This area forms the heart of Magdeburg’s medieval and early modern heritage, making it a focal point for visitors interested in the city's ecclesiastical history and architecture. The site is also close to other prominent city center attractions, facilitating a rich cultural experience for visitors.
