Portal de Valldigna
The Portal de Valldigna is one of the most evocative remnants of medieval Valencia, marking the historic boundary between the Christian city and the old Moorish quarter. Built in 1400 by order of King Martin I, the stone arch once served as a symbolic gateway separating two distinct communities while allowing controlled passage between them. Today, it stands quietly in a narrow street of the El Carmen district, framed by traditional houses and decorated with a restored ceramic panel depicting the Virgin. Although modest in size, the arch carries centuries of cultural memory and offers a rare glimpse into the layered history of the city. Opened around 1400 as a gateway linking the Christian city to the morería (Moorish suburb) near Plaza de Mossén Sorell, this semicircular ashlar arch of Arab-inspired design features a Gothic-style altarpiece above depicting King James I granting lands for the Monastery of Valldigna, with the abbot's house once adjoining it.
