Het Oude Loo is a secluded 15th‑century castle hidden within the royal estate of Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn. Originally built as a hunting lodge, it is surrounded by a tranquil moat that enhances its medieval charm. In 1684, William III of Orange purchased the castle and the surrounding land, later commissioning the construction of the grand palace nearby. Although Het Oude Loo is still used today by the Dutch royal family as a private country residence and is not open to the public, its presence adds depth to the historical landscape of the estate. The surrounding park, accessible only during spring, offers a rare glimpse of the castle’s serene environment, complete with woodland paths, a sculpture pond, and blooming rhododendrons. Quiet, atmospheric, and steeped in centuries of royal history, Het Oude Loo remains one of Apeldoorn’s most intriguing and storied landmarks.
