Radio Kootwijk is one of the most atmospheric and iconic landmarks near Apeldoorn, rising like a sculptural monument from the vast Veluwe heathlands. Built between 1918 and 1923, the complex once formed the heart of the Netherlands’ long‑distance radio communication network, creating the first direct wireless link with the Dutch East Indies. Its main building, known as Building A, is an imposing Art Deco structure often described as the “cathedral of the Veluwe” for its dramatic silhouette and monumental presence. Surrounded by open landscapes of sand, forest, and heather, the site blends industrial heritage with natural beauty, offering a rare combination of history and wilderness. Although no longer in operation, Radio Kootwijk remains a protected national monument and a captivating destination for visitors interested in architecture, technology, and the quiet grandeur of the Veluwe.

This iconic Art Deco transmitter station rises amid the vast Kootwijkerzand sand dunes, surrounded by Staatsbosbeheer nature reserve trails, heather fields and the Water Tower just 139m away. Nearby sites include Jachthuis Sint Hubertus hunting lodge (5.9km), Het Aardhuis café (6.5km), and entrances to De Hoge Veluwe National Park (6km), ideal for combining industrial heritage tours with hiking, cycling and wildlife spotting in Western Europe's largest active sand drift.
