Riberhus Castle Ruins

Riberhus Castle Ruins
About

Riberhus Castle Ruins offer a quiet yet evocative reminder of Ribe’s medieval power. Once a royal stronghold built in the early 12th century, the castle served Danish kings for centuries before war and time reduced it to the grassy mound and scattered remains visible today. The site, known as Slotsbanken, is surrounded by a moat that hints at its former defensive strength. At its heart stands the bronze statue of Queen Dagmar, a beloved figure tied to the castle’s history and local legend. Although little of the original structure survives, the landscape retains a strong sense of place, inviting visitors to imagine the castle’s past grandeur. With open views toward Ribe and the surrounding marshlands, the ruins offer a peaceful blend of history, nature, and reflection, making Riberhus an atmospheric stop for anyone exploring Denmark’s oldest town.

Ribe Denmark
Location

Riberhus Castle Ruins are located at Erik Menveds Vej, 6760 Ribe, Denmark, perched on an 8-meter-high mound (Slotsbanken) just a 10-minute walk from Ribe's historic harbor and town center. Once a powerful royal castle dating back to the early 1200s and home to Queen Dagmar, the fortress was demolished in the late 1600s, leaving only earthworks, a surrounding moat, and atmospheric grass-covered ramparts. At the site stands a striking bronze statue of Queen Dagmar by sculptor Anne Marie Carl-Nielsen, commemorating the beloved queen who resided here in the early 13th century. Nearby attractions include Ribe Cathedral, visible from the mound, and Kannikegården, an archaeological center built over Denmark's first Christian cemetery, just steps away. Within a short walk lie St. Catherine's Priory, Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval monastery, the Ribe Art Museum with its romantic gardens, and the Hex Museum of Witch Hunt. The charming cobbled streets lead to Den Gamle Arrest, a 16th-century former prison, Ribe Town Hall on Von Støckens Plads, and the Museum of the Vikings of Ribe. During summer, the famous Night Watchman tours begin at the central square, guiding visitors through atmospheric medieval alleyways. The site offers panoramic views over Ribe and the surrounding Wadden Sea landscape, making it an ideal spot for sunrise visits or peaceful walks. The UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park lies a short drive away, completing Ribe's rich cultural and natural heritage.
