Ribe Town Hall
About

Ribe Town Hall is one of Denmark’s oldest functioning civic buildings, a graceful landmark that reflects the long administrative history of the country’s oldest town. Built in the late 15th century and later expanded, the structure blends Gothic and Renaissance elements that give it a distinctive, time‑layered character. Its warm brick façade, stepped gables, and arched entrance create an inviting presence on the historic square. Inside, the former council chamber and courtroom preserve centuries of local governance, including beautifully carved woodwork and portraits that trace Ribe’s civic story. The building also houses a small museum that highlights the town’s legal and political heritage. Ribe Town Hall remains a symbol of continuity and community life, offering visitors a rare opportunity to step inside a living piece of Danish municipal history.

Ribe Town Hall, also known as Det Gamle Rådhus, is located at Von Støckens Plads 1, 6760 Ribe, in the heart of Denmark's oldest town. Built in 1496, this striking red-brick medieval building stands just steps from Ribe Cathedral and the central square, Torvet. Directly opposite lies Hotel Dagmar and the Ribe Tourism Office, while Kannikegården, an archaeological center built over Denmark's first Christian cemetery, is visible nearby. Within a two-minute walk, visitors can explore St. Catherine's Priory, Scandinavia's best-preserved medieval monastery, and the Ribe Art Museum with its romantic gardens overlooking the cathedral. The charming cobbled streets lead to the Hex Museum of Witch Hunt, Maren Splids House, Den Gamle Arrest (a 16th-century former prison), and the Jacob A. Riis Museum. Just beyond lies the Museum of the Vikings of Ribe and the Flood Column marking historic Wadden Sea storm surges. During summer, the famous Night Watchman tours depart from Torvet, guiding visitors through atmospheric medieval alleyways past the town hall's distinctive comb-toothed gables. The UNESCO-listed Wadden Sea National Park lies a short drive away, completing Ribe's rich cultural and natural landscape. The town hall itself houses the Rådhussamlingen museum, showcasing Ribe's governance and judicial history, and remains a popular venue for civil weddings in its historic civic hall.
