Terrasstrapporna is one of Helsingborg’s most distinctive urban landmarks, a grand staircase that climbs dramatically from the city centre toward Kärnan and the heights of Slottshagen. Built in the early 20th century, the terraces combine elegant stonework, sweeping stairways, and ornamental details that reflect the era’s ambition to create monumental public spaces. As visitors ascend, the city unfolds below in a series of framed views, with the harbour, rooftops, and the Öresund gradually appearing between the balustrades. The staircase serves not only as a functional link between different levels of the city but also as a scenic promenade, especially lively in summer when people gather on the steps or pause to enjoy the surroundings. Location

Terrasstrapporna, officially known as King Oscar II's Terrace Steps, located in the absolute center of Helsingborg. This grand stone staircase serves as a dramatic link between the city’s lower harbor district and the elevated historic parkland above. Situated at the eastern end of Stortorget, the city’s main square, the steps are impossible to miss for anyone exploring the downtown core. The area immediately surrounding Terrasstrapporna is arguably the most culturally rich and visually stunning part of Helsingborg. At the very top of the stairs lies the entrance to Slottshagen, a beautiful park that houses the iconic Kärnan, a medieval tower and the sole survivor of a once-mighty fortress. From the terraces of the stairs, visitors can enjoy unparalleled panoramic views of the city rooftops, the bustling harbor, and the Øresund strait stretching across to the Danish coast. For those who prefer a less strenuous ascent, a unique historic elevator—complete with an operator—is tucked into one of the towers to whisk guests to the upper levels. Just a few steps from the bottom of the staircase, the lively energy of Stortorget offers a wealth of nearby attractions. The square is home to the ornate, Neo-Gothic Helsingborg City Hall, famous for its clock tower and stained-glass windows. Culture seekers can walk just a couple of blocks to find Dunkers Kulturhus, the city's premier arts center, or visit St. Mary’s Church, the oldest building in the city.
